On September 21, 2023, GSSI (Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative) announced that Marine Eco-Label Japan (MEL) received re-recognition for FMS (Fisheries Management Standard) Ver. 2.0 and AMS (Aquaculture Management Standard) Ver. 2.0 following the completion of the benchmarking assessment process.

The benchmarking review began in November 2022 and was completed with a resolution of the GSSI Steering Board after an independent expert assessment, on-site audit, Benchmark Committee review and 30 days of public consultation.
