Marine Eco-Label Japan (MEL-J) has been promoting sustainable and ecosystem-based fisheries resource management practices by fishers through its certification programme (Marine Eco-Label Japan). As the scheme owner, MEL-J develops its own certification standard and guidelines, while also undertaking associated activities.
MEL-J is currently revising certification standard in order to enhance the credibility of Marine Eco-Label Japan both domestically and abroad, to meet the Sustainable Sourcing Code for Fishery Products of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo in 2020, and to accelerate export of Japanese seafood. As part of this effort, MEL-J is applying for recognition by the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) global benchmark.
MEL-J has set up a standards committee, and developed a draft chain of custody certification standard. MEL-J would like to invite your comments on the draft standard to reflect in the future revision process.
